SALT LAKE CITY, UT - As the holiday meal approaches, be thankful turkey is the bird of choice....because chicken has been linked to an outbreak of e-coli in seven different states.
So far, 19 people have been infected and Costco salad made with rotisserie chicken may be the culprit. Five people are hospitalized and two of the infected are now suffering from kidney failure.
Laine McCullough, an Epidemiologist with the Utah State Health Department says, "It can be quite serious."
You typically get sick anywhere from two to eight days after eating e-coli contaminated food. It is especially serious for children. According to the Centers for Disease Control, symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach aches.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the contamination. Meanwhile, the chicken salad has already been tossed from Costco shelves.
"Any chicken salad from Costco should be regarded as contaminated product," says McCullough.
The chicken salad was most likely bought in late October or early November. So far, no deaths have been reported. But the nationwide scare is enough to ruffle anyone's feathers!
