HOUSTON — It would seem the script was flipped Thursday morning at a bank in downtown Houston, where witnesses said an employee scared off an alleged robber instead being frightened himself.

The man walked into the Wells Fargo at 2714 Smith street around 10:15 a.m. and handed the teller a threatening note demanding cash, according to FBI officials. However, witness said the accused robber was somehow frightened at the sight of a bank employee and quickly ran off without taking any money. He  was last seen heading west on Drew Street on foot, detectives said.

Investigators said it’s unclear what about the employee startled the man, but alleged culprit is on the run empty-handed, and none the richer.

Investigators said no weapon was ever seen and no one was hurt during the attempted robbery.

The FBI said the alleged robber was an African-American man in his 30s with a full beard and mustache. He had a medium build, weighing about 220 pounds, and was a little under 6 feet tall, investigators said. He was wearing  a plaid short-sleeve, button-down shirt, a blue undershirt, khaki shorts, white ankle-high socks and a high-top Jordan tennis shoes.

Anyone with information related to this attempted robbery is asked to call  the Houston Crime Stoppers tip line at 713-222-TIPS (8477) or the FBI Houston Field Office at (713) 693-5000. Authorities said information leading to charges or an arrest will be offered a reward of up to $5,000.
