WASHINGTON, D.C. – There’s a real family feud going on, but it’s not the game show.

It’s among Republicans in the House of Representatives, between those in favor of passing the bi-partisan federal budget proposal and those who wouldn’t mind seeing another government shutdown at Christmas.

“They’re using our members and they’re using the American people for their own goals,” said House Speaker John Boehner Wednesday. “This is ridiculous. Listen, if you’re for more deficit reduction, you’re for this agreement.”

Boehner was talking about groups like Heritage Action, Americans for Prosperity, the Club for Growth, and others who say the plan increases spending 63 billion dollars over the next two years, does an end run around the budget control act, and uses gimmicks to raise revenue.

“This budget agreement takes giant steps in the right direction. It’s not everything I want. But when groups come out and criticize an agreement that they’ve never seen, you begin to wonder just how credible those actions are.”

But it’s starting to look like Washington lawmakers have figured out that sometimes you have to hold your nose to get things done.

A tough lesson even for Paul Ryan, the former vice-presidential candidate who co-authored the deal, knowing he’ll have to answer for it if he tries for national office again.

“So, I’m going to do what I think is right, what people in Wisconsin elected me to do, and what my colleagues asked me to, and I’m not going to let any personal political consideration down the road cloud that judgment, because I, quite frankly, just don’t think that’s right.”

Besides, who wants to be the one to give the American people a lump of coal for Christmas?
