PRAIRIE VIEW – Prairie View A&M may be getting a new street. Well, not a new street, but a new street name: the Sandy Bland Parkway, named after Sandra Bland, the Chicago-area woman who committed suicide last month in the Waller County jail.

Some folks have gotten together to plan next Tuesday’s “Walk of Solidarity” from the Memorial Student Center on campus to the Prairie View city council meeting at city hall.

They say renaming the street will be a “powerful statement that #blacklivesmatter.”

Bland was scheduled to start a job at her alma mater Prairie View when a Department of Public Safety officer arrested her during a traffic stop.

That was on a Friday. She died in her Waller County jail cell the following Monday morning.

The medical examiner ruled her death a suicide.

Her death, and the circumstances surrounding it, have led to several demonstrations in Waller County and back in Chicago, along with a wrongful death lawsuit.

It also prompted a review of procedures at county jails throughout the state.

Sandy Bland wanted to make a difference with her life. As it turns out, the difference may have come with her death.
