Houston boy dies after being shot in head while playing with gun

HOUSTON – An eight-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed after playing around with a gun in a home in southeast Houston near Hobby Airport.

Houston police responded to an emergency call at 4:45pm at a residence on 8442 Tavenor Lane. According to officials, two boys, ages eight and 11, found a couple of guns in the home and were playing with them by tossing them back and forth when the gun went off and struck the eight-year-old in the head. That child died on scene.

Yet another sad reminder of the dangers of guns and kids.

HPD Press Release regaring incident:

Houston police are investigating the apparent accidental shooting of a juvenile at 8442 Tavenor Lane about 5 p.m. on Thursday (July 30).

The victim, 8, was pronounced dead at the scene.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

HPD Homicide Division Officers T. Colbert and R. Klementich reported:

The victim and another juvenile, 11, were playing with a gun upstairs in a residence at the above address.  The gun accidentally discharged and the victim was struck.  Two female juveniles, who were present at the time, ran to a neighbor’s house and told adults of the shooting.  HPD patrol officers responded to the scene and found the male juvenile deceased.

No charges have been filed at this time, as the investigation is continuing.
