HOUSTON - Today Houston celebrated its 180th year birthday in Sam Houston Park.  On this day, one-hundred and eighty years ago, Houston was founded by The Allen Brothers.  The celebration, attended by mayor Turner, was hosted by Houston's Heritage Society.  The event was attended by native Houstonians and various visitors alike.  In addition to the free birthday cake that was provided by HEB, visitors were able explore various exhibits, such as face painting, coloring for the kids, and the antebellum houses dated back to the city's inception.  The houses showcase life in the region in the early 1800's. Re-enacters were on hand dressed in traditional garb and a The Celtaire String Band was  performing tunes from the times.

"We've come a long way from the Allen brothers."  said Mayor Sylvester Turner.

"And now we're a city of 2.2 million people, the most diverse city in the country.  We're still growing,  dynamic and vibrant.  If you want to know where the country is going, take a look at the city of Houston."
