HOUSTON, TX – Osama Bin Laden’s body might be rotting somewhere deep in the ocean, but the horror he left behind will stay with us for a long, long time. Twelve years have passed since the 9/11 attacks, and the question still remains: are we safer today?

Many of us might think we are, but we can’t let our guard down — terror could hit any time, at any place.  And it’s no secret the Houston Ship Channel is not just “any place”:

“The Ship Channel-related businesses contribute over one million jobs,” explained Mark Smith, Police Chief at the Port of Houston Authority.

“It’s a lifeline to the global energy industry.” added Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia.

Badges, badges and more badges Wednesday morning. Sheriff Garcia and representatives from other homeland security agencies shared the latest improvements and acquisitions in the local fight against organized crime and terrorism with the public. New boats, a helicopter, new technology, new special units and more agents.

And while you and I lead our lives, our law enforcement agents know they have to think and act faster, better and more creatively than our enemies.

“At the end of the day, this is what we do,’ said FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen Morris. ‘Every single day, this is what we do.”

Hopefully we’ve learned the lessons and you know the saying: “If you see something, say something.”
