riverCHICAGO, IL – What was supposed to be a fun getaway to Chicago for 30-year-old Houstonian, Alicia Garnett and a friend, turned into her final destination.

Police say Garnett slipped into the frigid waters of the Chicago River just east of the Michigan Avenue Bridge, early Tuesday morning.

Police Marine Units and divers had to make their way around and under large slabs of ice to pull Garnett out of the river, where firefighters were waiting to take her to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Garnett was pronounced dead at the hospital.
