HOUSTON, TX - Here's some food for thought. Houston is awesome, but not every neighborhood has the same access to fresh produce at an affordable price, or a good supermarket nearby for that matter.

"There's not enough food markets in the area. We need a fresh food market out here," said Tammie Scott, a Third Ward resident.

Areas of town where you can't find healthy food is what's called a food desert, a very sensitive issue in the Bayou City. The competition among supermarkets in Houston is fierce, but it looks like the big chains are putting all their meat, fruit and vegetables in certain neighborhoods and avoiding or downgrading their presence in others.

The debate at city council is boiling these days, after Kroger requested a property tax abatement of $770,000 over the next ten years in order to expand their distribution facility.

So, what's the solution? Officials say one thing the big chain stores could do is open up quality, signature stores in these neighborhoods. It's an issue that'll be on the table for the city council's next meeting on Wednesday, June 17.
