HPD: Man, security guard injured in shootout outside east Houston sports bar

HOUSTON — Police are investigating after a shootout between security guards and a patron outside a sports bar early Saturday in east Houston.

Jose Hernandez, 26, was asked to leave Emiliano's Sports Bar in the 7700 block of the East Freeway around 2 a.m. after officers said he got into an altercation inside the bar. Police said two of the venue's security guards were escorting Hernandez to his car when the man reached into the back seat, grabbed a weapon and started shooting.

Paul Guenzel, 50, was shot as the guards and Hernandez exchanged fire.

During the altercation, Hernandez was shot multiple times and Guenzel was shot in the stomach. Both men were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The police department confirmed no charges have been filed as of Monday.

An investigation is ongoing.
