A night of horror in Southern Brazil.

Fire officials say at least 232 people are dead after a fire raged through a popular nightclub in Santa Maria. Most of the people killed reportedly died from smoke inhalation.

Hundreds of people did make it out of the club, but many of them are said to be injured, and were trampled in the panic. A witness says the fire started ‘out of nowhere’ on a stage and quickly spread to the ceiling.

The cause is still under investigation, but authorities say there was a pyrotechnics show going on.

The Kiss Nightclub is said to be so popular it draws two to three thousand people a night on weekends.

A fire official says it was one thousand people over capacity Saturday night, and investigators say – for some reason – security guards kept people from leaving.

Local students were supposedly celebrating the end of their summer break.

So sad, they had no idea it would be the end of their lives.
