HOUSTON, TX – Even if you’re not a fan of the shopping world, chances are you know Macy’s. Sadly downtown Houston will be void of the historic store come early spring.

The massive department store on Main Street first opened its doors as the famous Foley’s back in 1947. The store’s real estate group says it decided to close the store because they have other plans for the block.

Nearly 140 employees are going to be out of a job, but many will have the option to work at another Macy’s location. However, if they just hold out, they might be working at Macy’s downtown, just not on this block.

Mayor Annise Parker quickly put together a Downtown Retail Task Force that is going to try and find Macy’s a new home. The mayor isn’t making any promises, but say’s Macy’s will be the new force’s first priority.

If that doesn’t work, they’ll continue to find ways to increase retail options downtown.
