SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Here’s something you don’t see every day, not even in open-carry states like Utah: cellphone video of a man holding a gun on another man face down on the sidewalk.
It happened in Salt Lake City. The man with the gun was a retired police officer who works as a security guard. He thought he saw the man on the ground using a knife to assault a man on a bicycle.
But that’s not quite what happened. Police say the man on the ground was using a knife to get back his bicycle that another guy apparently stole. That’s when the security guard showed up and drew his weapon, thinking an assault was going on.
“I see somebody in need of help, and it’s just the right thing to do, said Nick, the guy with the gun. “The wrong thing to do would be to turn my back and have somebody be stabbed because I didn’t do anything.”
In the end, no one pressed charges and no one went to jail. But this is a good example of why “shoot first, ask questions later” is not always the way to go.
