HOUSTON - On Friday morning, METRO bus driver Paul Nelson went above and beyond the call of duty. Nelson noticed a home on fire in the Heights, so he jumped off his bus racing to the burning house and carried an injured man to safety. Nelson suffered some burns to his neck and hand in the process.
There was a ceremony in the afternoon to hail Nelson a hero, but he was relunctant to accept that hono saying he was just helping.
"On behalf of the entire METRO family and the city of Houston, we can't thank him enough for being quick on the draw, putting himself in danger, keeping a cool head and saving a life," said METRO Chairman, Gilbert Garcia
When asked why he ran towards danger, Nelson simply said, "Life matters."
Mr. Nelson will receive special recognition from METRO's Board of Directors at the next Board meeting on August 27, 2015.
