CAIRO, EGYPT – Egypt continues to be in turmoil after a day of violence that left hundreds dead and thousands wounded in Cairo and other cities.

The Egyptian Health Ministry, yes, an unfortunate title, but the Health Ministry says at least 525 people died in clashes between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi, many of whom are members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood claims more than 1,400 died with around 8,000 wounded.

One mosque in Cairo now doubles as a morgue.

The Brotherhood displayed the bodies of at least 100 people wrapped in white, blood-stained sheets.

Another Cairo mosque was the site for funerals for the 43 police officers who also died.

President Obama interrupted his Martha’s Vineyard vacation to condemn the violence and to say he’s calling off next month’s joint military exercise with Egypt.

He also called for an end to what he termed the cycle of violence, and told the interim government to respect the rights of people to protest.

At the same time, he said, “We call on those who are protesting to do so peacefully and condemn the attacks that we’ve seen by protesters — including on churches.”

An unconfirmed amateur video reportedly shows the burning Wednesday night of a church in Minya, Egypt. Men can be seen smashing what appears to be part of the church furnishings.

A mandatory curfew is in place, but that did not stop Muslim Brotherhood supporters from storming a government building in Giza and setting it on fire.

When all of this will end is anybody’s guess, but it will eventually burn out, one way or the other.
