CANONSBURG, Pa. — A horrible tragedy near Pittsburgh early Thursday morning as two police officers were shot responding to a domestic abuse call.
"They were dispatched to a call of a domestic on Woodcrest Road and upon their arrival, the two officers were ambushed," Pennsylvania state trooper Melinda Bonderanka said. "They were shot with an unknown type firearm."
One of the officers, 52-year-old Scott Leslie Bashioum, later died at a local hospital while the other officer was life-flighted to a Pittsburgh hospital.
"The second officer is out of surgery and in stable condition at this time," Bonderanka reported.
Police said the officers were met with gunfire the moment they approached the front porch of the home. Then, a neighbor reported hearing an officer shout, "My partner's down!"
But the scene got even worse. The body of a six-month pregnant woman was found inside the home, and police said the victim even had a 'protection from abuse' order against the suspected gunman, Michael Cwiklinski.
Authorities said they also found the suspect's body in the home. Cwiklinski dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Neighbors reportedly said that police were often called to the home to break up domestic fights.
Now, a community rocked by early morning gunfire is left to pick up the pieces.
As one officer put it, "Somehow we'll find our faith to get through this."
