ALPINE, Texas - It was a frightening morning Thursday in west Texas after a student shot and injured a schoolmate before turning the gun on herself inside a high school bathroom.

Investigators said a 14-year-old freshman committed suicide around 9 a.m. shortly after she started firing a gun in the women's bathroom at Alpine High School, according to the Brewster County Sheriff's Office. The city of Alpine is about 200 miles southeast of El Paso near the Texas-Mexico Border.

Sheriff Ronny Dodson said the teen who was initially shot was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. Dodson said a policeman was also injured from 'friendly fire' by a second officer responding to the school shooter. His condition is unknown.

Officials said the shooting, which took place just three weeks into the new school year, forced administrators to place all school in the town on lock down. Many students were evacuated to a Jehovah's Witness church directly across from the high school where the shooting occurred, according to local reports.

Alpine resident and former Congressman Pete Gallego issued a statement saying, "Alpine has had some rough days, but this has been one of the roughest. All residents of Alpine are struggling to make sense of this tragedy."

With details still coming in, the obvious question is what was the teen's motive.
