A billboard advertising a plastic surgeon’s services in Jackson, Michigan, gets a facelift of its own after it was vandalized by someone hitting back at its message.
The billboard, put up by Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery, originally shows two muffins wearing jeans with the tag line: “Friends don’t let friends muffin top.”
Well clearly that hit a nerve with someone. Because a vandal decided to spray paint “You’re beautiful” on top of the billboard and put smiley faces on the muffins.
Dr. Pramit Malhotra, director of Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery, was pretty surprised at the backlash from the community. He said it was not an attack on overweight people.
“It was meant to be light-hearted and (directed at) people who are looking to make positive self-image changes.”
People definitely didn’t take it that way, posting a series of comments on their Facebook page. Saying it was “Tasteless and rude!” “Gross fat-shaming is unoriginal and hurtful.”
This is not the first time the Dr. has struck a nerve with the community. A billboard featuring two coffee cups with the tag line “Size Matters”, was taken down after backlash from vandals.
However, the muffin top billboard is staying up.
Honestly, I think people are overreacting. The Doctor is advertising his services in a clever, and my opinion, funny way. He’s not “fat shaming” anyone. Maybe he could “inject” these over-reactors with some self-esteem of their own and a sense of humor. Because if this billboard offends you that much, clearly you have body image issues.
And that’s today’s helping of The Online Dish with Maggie.
