WASHINGTON, D.C. – You don’t need a license to kill to own a silencer.

You just need to have the money and the patience, and live in a state that lets you have a silencer, or to be correct, a suppressor.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives says the civilian market for suppressors shot up 37% last year to nearly a half-a-million registered with Uncle Sam.

And because of that, you may have to wait up to 9 months to get yours registered.

A suppressor works like a muffler on a car. It doesn’t make the gun silent; it just reduces the sound of the bullet firing.

“The sound is reduced so if you don’t have hearing protection on, it’s not as damaging to your ears. It’s also more comfortable for people nearby whenever you’re shooting,” explained Mike Jaster, retail manager at Houston’s Athena Gun Club.

Texas legalized the use of suppressors for hunting in 2012. The suppressor keeps the beasties from hearing people shooting at them.

Besides hunting, people use suppressors for target practice.

Suppressors can cost anywhere from a couple-hundred bucks to more than a thousand, and sometimes can cost as much or more than the gun it’s used with.

Of course, you can really bring down the cost by picking up an oil filter.

It may not be, but it gets the job done.
