NEWARK, NJ – You know what they say: One bad apple spoils the bunch. It looks like that is what’s going on with Rutgers athletics.
Rutgers University President Dr. Robert Barchi is demanding that all athletic departments review practice video for evidence of bullying of any kind.
It’s unlikely they’ll find anything as extreme as former men’s basketball coach Mike Rice’s behavior, but Barchi is probably just covering his own behind after some are questioning his response to the whole ordeal.
Reports say Barchi was told about the video last fall, but he claims he didn’t see it until last week. It was then that Rice was immediately fired.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is standing by Barchi, but he’s not being so nice about Rice.
“Win or lose that is completely reprehensible, unacceptable conduct,” said Christie.
Something else people are calling unacceptable is the lovely little settlement agreement former Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti is walking away with. He, too, was canned – oops, resigned – last week, but he’s going to be living pretty large with his $1.2 million salary, car allowance, two years of health insurance and his school-issued iPad and laptop.
It just goes to show, you can’t get away with playing dirty, but you can take it to the bank.
