HARROLD COUNTY, TX – In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, there’s been a lot of talk about campus safety and gun laws. So, it’s kind of puzzling that many folks consider more firepower on campus as the solution. Take Harrold ISD in north Texas for example.

The district’s so-called “guardian policy” allows teachers with concealed handgun licenses to carry their weapons on campus. With the nearest police station 30 minutes away from campus, we understand how a small town school might operate under a different set of rules than those big city districts. While there haven’t been any incidents in Harrold ISD, which Superintendent David Thweatt attributes to his buffed up security policy, Houston ISD (the largest school district in the state) hasn’t had a deadly incident since the Poe Elementary School bombing, over 50 years ago.

The Houston districts have done so without arming their educators. If you ask our gun toting Governor, Rick Perry, however and he thinks it’s time to lock and load! Telling a crowd in Richland Hills, in part, “…if you go through the process and you have been duly back grounded and trained and you are a concealed handgun licensed-carrying individual, you should be able to carry your handgun anywhere in this state.” Perry’s not the only one.

Do you remember that crazy gun-guy in Mason, Texas? Crockett Keller, who refused to teach liberals or Muslims at his gun store? Well, now he’s offering local-teachers a 10% discount if they want to take a Concealed Handgun Licensing class.

No word on if they’ll have to show their voting record or religious affiliation card to sign up.

It’s not hard to see why people would have differing opinions on such a hot-button issue! Some are for it, some are against it and many are on the fence about the issue.

The way we see it, teachers shouldn’t have to worry about anything more than educating our students, because it’s really up to law enforcement to protect them.
