FRIENDSWOOD, TX – Things aren’t too friendly today in Friendswood for Texas senator John Cornyn.
That’s because he got an unexpected challenge in the Republican primary from Congressman Steve Stockman of Friendswood, who represents the Texas 36th.
Cornyn is the senior senator from Texas and the second-ranking Republican in the Senate.
Stockman is the tea-party favorite who first represented the Texas 9th from ‘95-‘97, and got re-elected to Congress last year.
Stockman filed his papers just minutes before Monday’s deadline, and it surprised a lot of Texas political observers who saw Cornyn as being a shoo-in for the March 4 primary.
But Stockman has good name recognition around the state, particularly among the far-right of the Republican Party because of his dislike for everything Obama, and that includes Obamacare, which Stockman thinks has a better chance of going away if Cornyn goes away.
But he may need more than that to beat Cornyn who has a $7 million campaign stash compared to Stockman’s 32-grand. And you know what they say about money talking.
