HOUSTON, TX - The investigation continues into what caused a train to derail on the bridge near Old Katy Road in Houston.
Nearby residents seemed more concerned with the "What could have been" rather than the "How?”
According to a T.X.D.O.T. report, approximately 2,200 trains per week, or more than 300 per day, travel within the Houston area. Of the 22 rail lines, 14 are rated to carry hazardous materials and the bridge track where the derailment occurred is one of them. And that doesn’t include possible radioactivity.
So, if the train car had had hazardous cargo, a HAZMAT accident, on this bridge alone, would affect a 1.97-mile radius and 44,200 residents would have been in danger. It's enough to make you think.
