HOUSTON, TX - It's the time of the year to light up the city with holiday decorations, but be careful, it's not as easy as it looks.

15,000 people end up in emergency rooms every November and December due to holiday decorating accidents, according to recent statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The easiest way to avoid slipping, falling off the roof or even being electrocuted as a homeowner, hire a professional.

Matt Ellisor owns and operates Bright Lights Houston, and says the risk for homeowners to do the work themselves isn't worth it.

"Homeowners should not be up on their roofs, it's just too dangerous," Ellisor said. "Homeowners do not get up on their roofs on a daily basis. They get scared. They freak out and next thing you know they're falling off. It's just not worth it."

Ellisor also suggests using contractors with electrical experience, noting knowledge of circuit capabilities is important.  Plus, make sure the firm you hire will also take down the decorations after the holidays.
