HOUSTON (KIAH) — A fatal crash overnight has all main lanes of I-10 westbound on the Katy Freeway at Washington Avenue shut down this morning.
The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. According to Houston police, a blue Chevy Impala was driving westbound on I-10 when officers believed it struck the rear of a gray Fruefauf 18-wheeler trailer.
The rear end damage to the Impala indicated to investigators that it was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle, whose driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid, police said.
The collision caused the Impala to burst into flames. The driver of the Impala was declared dead at the scene.
The identification of the victim is unknown at the time of the accident.
Anyone with additional information in this crash or on the wanted driver and vehicle is urged to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit at 713-247-4072 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
The lanes of the Katy Freeway were closed for more than five hours, reopening around 10 a.m.
